Phosphoric Acid

  Introduction

As a chemical precursor, phosphoric acid is traditionally synthesized from white phosphorus. Produced in an old thermal process for upgrading phosphate rock, white phosphorus has long been a key industrial intermediate for the synthesis of phosphorus-containing chemicals, including herbicides, flame retardants, catalyst ligands, battery electrolytes, pharmaceuticals, and detergents. In contrast, phosphate fertilizers are made on a much larger scale from phosphoric acid, which is obtained by treating phosphate rock with sulfuric acid. Anhydrous phosphoric acid gives trimetaphosphate using sodium chloride, and trichlorosilane, which is primarily used to produce high-purity silicon, reduces trimetaphosphate to the bi(trichlorosilyl)phosphide anion. This anion is the entry point to value-added organophosphorus chemicals such as primary and secondary alkylphosphines.

   Application

Chemical conversion coatings are applied to steel and aluminum surfaces to protect against corrosion. Phosphate solutions containing phosphoric acid with special active additives are used to protect steel vehicles, office furniture, aircraft, ships and commercial and military machinery. Phosphate conversion coatings are widely used to provide good protection against corrosion of steel sheets, especially in the automotive industry. Phosphoric acid is used in metallurgical applications to supplement the treatment of steel sheets used for the body of steel cars and steel machinery.

The phosphate layer consists of several crystals of different sizes, which indicates the existence of empty space between these crystals. Phosphoric acid is used to remove rust from corroded surfaces. Black phosphate coating improves their corrosion resistance. Phosphoric acid solutions are used to clean equipment and machinery in industrial plants, for example, dairies. Fuel cells work to produce electricity with phosphoric acid as a liquid electrolyte.

Safe Storage & Disposal

Store phosphoric acid in a cool, well-ventilated area protected from moisture. Keep away from incompatible substances such as oxidizing agents, metals, combustible materials. This chemical should be stored in a metallic or coated fiberboard container using a strong polyethylene inner package. Dispose of this chemical in accordance with federal, state, and local environmental control regulations.
